Assessing water quality in Ilhabela
Posted On April 15, 2015
On Monday we teamed up with the staff and leadership of the Sustainable Ilhabela Institute to test out Promise Tracker on local sanitation issues.
Just off the coast of the state of São Paulo, Ilhabela is home to about 30,000 year-round residents and is major tourist destination for São Paulo and neighboring states. Residents have identified water quality as one of the most pressing issues for the island as untreated sewage dumped into the ocean makes the city beaches unswimmable for a significant part of the year.
The team designed 2 data collection campaigns – one focused on assessing the presence of trash and sewage in canals throughout the city, the other on public perception of water quality on the island.
