Monitoring São Luís

The Promise Tracker team made our first visit to the northeast region of Brazil this past week to run a workshop with members of Nossa São Luís in the capital of Maranhão. The poorest state in Brazil, Maranhão is emerging from more than 50 years of political leadership by the Sarney family with the election of its first communist governor.
We worked with a group of 15, including university students and civil society veterans that have been working in education, transportation, waste management and variety other issues for over a decade.  The team created campaigns to monitor bike lanes, trash collection sites and the construction of elementary schools.

Building on the experience of this first workshop, we’ll be working with Nossa São Luís to plan a traning-of-trainers workshop and a launch event for Promise Tracker in the region, bringing together citizens, government and local businesses.
